No School Day = Desert Adventure Day!
Forget sitting at home on your day off from school-come explore the amazing world right outside our doors! Join Girl Scouts and the Department of Environment and Sustainability's Desert Conservation Program for an interactive adventure all about one of Southern Nevada's most fascinating residents: the desert tortoise!
Girls ages 5-12 will discover what makes the Mojave Desert such a special place and learn how animals and plants survive in a habitat where water is precious and temperatures can be extreme.
Ever wonder what happens to a desert tortoise when winter comes? Girls will learn about brumation, the special period of winter dormancy that helps desert tortoises survive colder months. We'll also learn how Mojave Max prepares for winter and why his seasonal behavior is so important to understanding desert wildlife.
But this adventure is about more than just tortoises! Girls will become desert detectives as they learn about:
Through hands-on activities, discovery, and plenty of opportunities to ask questions, girls will see the desert in a whole new way. They'll leave with new knowledge, new conservation skills, and the confidence to be a Desert Conservation Hero!

This experience also helps girls take steps toward their Girl Scout badges:
Daisies: Eco Learner - Steps 1, 2 & 3
Brownies: Eco Friend - Steps 1, 2, 4 & 5
Juniors: Animal Habitats - Steps 1, 2 & 4
And because every adventure deserves a little something to remember it by, each girl will receive a special fun patch!
