Will GSSNV hold summer camp this year?

On May 4, 2020 Girl Scouts of Southern Nevada announced the decision to cancel all in-person summer camp programs including Frias Frontier, Camp Ducktail, Camp Invention, and the Ultimate Utah Getaway for the health and safety of our campers and staff.

Why did GSSNV make the decision to cancel all in-person summer camp programs?

While our camps adhere to the most stringent safety protocols, much is unknown about when Nevada will be fully relieved of the Stay at Home directives. Social distancing and crowd limits will likely remain in effect throughout the summer, and too much is still unknown with respect to the spread of COVID-19.

Which summer camp sessions are canceled?

All sessions of the following programming are cancelled: Frias Frontier (sleep-away camp), Camp Ducktail (day camp), Camp Invention (day camp), and Ultimate Utah Adventure (sleep-away adventure trip).

Why did GSSNV decide to cancel camp now?

While there are still many unknowns about COVID-19 and its impact on our communities, the information we are receiving from public health officials, the CDC, and the Southern Nevada Health District indicate we are far from recovery and social distancing recommendations are going to be with us for several more months. We also know many families, staff, and volunteers were looking to us to make a decision to reduce some of the uncertainty in their lives.

Why did GSSNV cancel all summer camps instead of delaying the start of summer camp?

Too much is still unknown with respect to the spread of COVID-19 and with social distancing and crowd limits likely to remain in effect throughout the summer, we decided to focus on our upcoming virtual summer experiences.

Will I receive a refund?

Yes. All registrations will receive a full refund. Campers enrolled in sessions registered in our Doubleknot event registration system will begin receiving refunds within two weeks.

If I received a campership this year, will I be able to use it in 2021?

Because family circumstances change from year-to-year, a new campership application will need to be completed to support your Girl Scout’s camp experience during the 2021 summer season.

Will GSSNV offer alternative camp options?

The GSSNV programs team is busy creating virtual summer camp options for families. Enrollment will be on a weekly basis, similar to traditional camp. Registered campers will receive a kit via mail and a link to an online component hosted by council staff.

Refunds will be processed for camp registrations first, and members will need to re-register for virtual sessions when the registration becomes available.

Are other GSSNV summer programs canceled?

At this time, all in-person summer camps (Frias Frontier, Camp Ducktail, Camp Invention and Ultimate Utah Adventure) are cancelled for 2020. As of May 1, the GSSNV office and shop remain closed and all in-person troop meetings and activities are suspended until further notice. We will communicate to all members once we know for certain that in-person activities can resume.

Are current property reservations for this summer canceled?

At this time, property reservations have been suspended. We will communicate to all members once we know for certain that in-person activities and property reservations can resume.

If sleep-away camp is suspended at GSSNV camp properties, will you open up reservations for troops or families?

Due to current social distancing guidelines, GSSNV properties will remain closed until further notice.

What is the financial impact of this decision on GSSNV?

Like many individuals, organizations, and businesses, Girl Scouts of Southern Nevada is experiencing and anticipates a sustained a financial impact from the COVID-19 pandemic. Our council is financially stable and has used its resources wisely throughout the years to build a reserve for contingencies just like this. GSSNV continues to explore further savings, efficiencies, and new revenue streams.
