Science, Technology, Engineering, & Math - STEM
Women make up 46 percent of the workforce, yet women hold only 25 percent of technical jobs. Fortunately, Girl Scouts understands what motivates girls to take an early interest in science, technology, engineering, and math. Through hands-on robotics teams, science camps, and career exploration days, Girl Scouts see the world of technology through a lens that inspires girls to tackle tomorrow’s technological opportunities and challenges.
Throughout the past 25 years, the percentage of overweight girls has more than doubled, putting girls at risk both physically and emotionally. With childhood obesity rates at an all-time high, the need to make well-being a priority is clear. Every girl deserves to live a healthy life—emotionally and physically. Comprehensive approaches are most effective in combating obesity and instilling positive health choices. Girl Scouts offers more than 60 age-level awards combing physical fitness with good nutrition, a healthy body image to help girls attain an overall healthy lifestyle.
Entrepreneurship and Financial Literacy
In 2008, the number of female corporate officers in Fortune 500 companies was less than 15%. Girl Scouts offers the largest girl-led business program in the country, designed to teach girls entrepreneurship and financial literacy. Goal-setting, decision making, money management, and business ethics - Girl Scouts provides girls the life skills and confidence to take control of their own financial future. By developing business literacy skills, Girl Scouts is preparing girls to take their place as tomorrows respected business leaders and CEOs.
Girl Scouts have always been green! Girl Scouts have a rich history of conservation, restoration, and preservation of the world’s resources. In fact, “use resources wisely” is a cornerstone of the Girl Scout Promise that every girl pledges when she becomes a Girl Scout. Through environmental activities and partnerships, girls explore Southern Nevada, learning about its ecosystems and taking action in projects to protect and restore the resources that are vital and precious to our community.
