The Mental Health Awareness Patch objectives are to educate Girl Scouts about the brain and its influence on thoughts, feelings, and behavior, and through that knowledge, increase awareness and understanding of mental illness.  Through education we can change perceptions and reduce the stigma of mental illness.

This patch program enhances a feeling of patriotism in girls, while teaching the symbolism behind the U.S. and state flags.

Breast Cancer Awareness

All women are at risk for breast cancer.  It causes more deaths among women than any other form of cancer except lung cancer.  Breast cancer may be curable if  it is  are found early.  Since we don’t know what causes breast cancer or how to prevent it, the best protection is to detect it as early as possible.  The earlier young women learn to perform breast self examinations and about healthy lifestyles, the more likely it is that they will be able to detect changes in their breasts and seek medical attention.  As Girl Scout troops work on the patch, they will help educate their friends and family members.

This patch is to increase awareness of the importance of recycling.  Did you know that the energy saved from one glass bottle will light a 100 watt light bulb for four hours?  Did you know that the United States throws away 2.5 million plastic bottles every hour?  With the threat of many environmental problems, recycling is necessary to help the world survive.  This patch will help you with the basics of recycling.

Singing is a timeless activity in the Girl Scouts. This program is designed to get your troop interested in singing. This will also give you an opportunity to learn new songs and have the ability to teach others.

Me and My VIP

This patch is to stimulate family interest in and knowledge of the Girl Scout program.  It is designed to increase their understanding or the ways girls can benefit from Girl Scout experiences.  Families come in different sizes and forms.  “Family” most often refers to close relation such as mother father, sister, and brother.  However, this term also refers to other important people in a person’s life.  Great grandparents, grandparents, step-parents, foster parents, guardians, aunts, uncles, cousins and family friends may be a part of the family.  For the purpose of this program, family members may include any significant individual in her Girl Scout life.
